When it comes to the festive season we all believe that ideally we should celebrated it with our families. I believe family is not only the little sister you are so protective over, nor the older brother who drives you mad, it is those who surround you. Whether it be geographically or cognitively. Moral support and presence is what brings that happy smile. They are the people who love the real you!

I miss those who are my family in Hossegor and I am grateful to have come home to the loving community in which I grew up in.

To see the smile on my grandmother's face when I first arrived home was indescribable. The first embrace accompanied by tears with my mum at the airport and the dorky hello, big hug and being lifted by my 'not so little' brother made me realise this was no longer a skype date relationship. I was home and summer number 5 was about to begin. One of the best things about travelling is coming home to such a spectacular part of the world. Who would think that I'd ever want to leave. Coming home makes you appreciate where we live, the beauty of the land meeting the sea, the loving neighbourhood and its everlasting joyful spirit that fills the salty breeze.

It is as though doing the right thing by others is an inconvenience to one’s self. In the attempt of being cool in this ‘too cool’ town, the lack of vehicle communication reflects poorly on one’s opinion of the French style of driving.A fear of allowing one see you are a responsible and road worthy driver looms in the minds of the French. Not to put them down too much, their road system is quite good, clear signage, very respectful on high ways etc, however, changing lanes and their specialty; the round-about, is another story. No pre indication of where their mind has chosen to travel. You would think a simple hand movement alerting fellow road users would save Monsieur the inevitable throw of hands and loud, silent mouth yelling ‘Putin!’ as you kindly cut him off.Who was to know he was going to continue? Maybe the French have the ability to read each other minds? They certainly know how to stare. Perhaps their immense practice of peering into each others’ souls gives them this fine ability in reading someone’s chosen exit from a round-about. Nothing but a simple task. The French. Fearful to display their intentions? Or do they have an excuse due to their supernatural capabilities?

A variety of people (that's obviously normal in a city - but seriously this place beholds the young, the old, the strange and the adventurous)

Let The Good Times Roll

Travel is not about where you've been or what you've seen, it's the moments you remember whether they be positive or not - or both!

4am en route Armaçao de Pêra to Hossegor we accidentally take a detour. Amongst our stress of taking the wrong highway exit, we forget the need to stop for petrol.
A sudden choke in the engine reminds us kindly.
In the middle of nowhere, the rain pouring, we imagine the worst.
We climb a hill, but only just; the engine cuts and we begin to roll.
We pass a sign, 2kms till the next petrol station.
We continue to roll.
Minutes later we are still rolling.
Still rolling the station is in sight. Sighs of relief overcome us.
Our momentum comes to an end and we stop literally 1m from the pump. Screams of joy and laughs of amazement fill the van. Luck was definitely on our side.

On this journey I saw a highway, a boring, straight road from the Algarve to Lisbon - negative.
I chatted and listened to music with my closest friend - positive.
And we experienced for the first and hopefully last time an amazing feat.
Unexpected and potentially difficult travel is always exciting!

It is always nice to be shown around a foreign place by a local. Their knowledge of where to go, where to avoid, how, at what time etc are all valuable elements in travel. Being taken to someones home town where they haven't visited is even more exciting. Walking down the streets of Armaçao de Pêra we were stopped by almost every old man and lady as they recognised the boy they once watched playing in the street. We devoured the best fish, socialised at the local bar and we even scored waves! Being on the the south coast of Portugal, close to the Mediterranean Sea this part of the Atlantic coast receives little swell. Fun waves all day.

After being home - Hossegor, France - for just one day we then flew to Sweden. Another true home of my beautiful friend. Walking around town was done in a day and just slotting into normal daily life was easy. Meeting his closest friends and family was a lot more enjoyable than sitting on a roof top bus touring the city to make sure every tourist site was ticked off. He took us to the bars he and his friends like, sat in prime people watching cafés and attempted to listen to their Swedish catch up conversations - fail!

The feeling you get when you are greeted by a person who has known the friend showing you around their home town since they were toddlers is of a special kind. They are so excited to see their unexpected friend and their happiness is infectious. Their big smile and genuine hand shake is welcoming.

I am a tourist in my own city, I would get lost too easily! I could give a tour of the Northern Beaches but anything inland or on the city side of the Harbour Bridge - tragic! I love showing friends around my home away from home. Hossegor, Bayonne, Biarritz - I will never get sick of sharing these beautiful places!

'Stoked & Broke', a film by Cyrus Sutton encouraged the inner stoke and basic want to surf something one could create. While packing to leave Peniche, Pumps, Brendos and Crille spotted some stored materials for the construction of the apartment we were staying in. Blue planks of styrofoam. These basic blocks were to become our creative outlet in an attempt to make stand up, body board like surf craft. We each had our own vision, discussing tail shapes, rail lines and buoyancy. Not wanting to disclose too much to each other a quiet day arrived in Armaçao de Pêra and we got to work with our basic tools.

On our day trip to Lisbon, Nick Pumphrey and I set off on a search for some epic walls. Lisbon is full of great sites but it is their colourful walls we desired to explore. Job done after a few laughs, big smiles and goofy looks. The shot of ginjinha at midday - a traditional Portuguese alcohol may have help a little too. Running through my mind.
A continuous jingle.
An unwanted repeat.
The limited lyrics that circle.

This is what hinders minds to be aware of each individual’s presence.
Why do we enjoy a catchy tune?
And once it has ‘caught’ you, how do you escape it’s forever repeating insignificant words?
In daily life we have the desire to expand our knowledge however in one way or another it is unfortunately dumbed.
The industry of what is called music includes many talented artists yet the diversity allows repetitive crap to be constantly played on the radio.
I am not saying that I do not enjoy singing along to their catchy tunes.
Nor do I not enjoy dancing to the same songs every time I go out.
It’s the times when you have been captured into the realm of poor lyrics and repetition that the mind is incapable of returning to it’s unique thought process.
Music takes us to a world of rhythm, insignificant to our surrounding, we have the choice to fill our ears with tunes that do not, if chosen, coordinate what the eyes see.

Brazilians Can't Barrel Ride

De Souza, Pupo, Alves, Medina, Andre and Muniz all successfully posted high scores in the Ripcurl Pro Peniche. Supertubes was pumping and the barrelling waves were only a few meters from the shore line. The crowd practically had their toes touching the water's edge and as each set sucked up and spat the jerseyed competitor out the salty blow swiped out faces with amazement. Each succession of every barrel threw the crowd's arms up with applause. People had travelled from far to watch the final day and see Kelly Slater be beaten by the Brazilian, Adriano de Souza. Such incredible entertainment. Perfect waves with the best in the world showing us how it's done. The strong Brazilian contingency on the tour consists of 6 surfers, most proving to excel in ariel manoeuvres. Coming from a country where waves are weak and competition is high, their aggressive approach and lack of bottom turns is evident. These guys however have proved themselves in the more surfable waves completing turns top to bottom and dominating their heats in the Ripcurl Pro. Coming from Hawaii, John John Florence has Pipe in his backyard, we could see how at home he felt in the similar conditions here in Peniche.

A Treat for Spanish Roadies

Travelling late at night, through the deserted roads that cross Spain flashing lights flicker along the highway. A method of attracting and luring fatigued truckies into what lies within. 'Club Jamaica' remains in our minds the rest were thankfully forgotten. It is said that in Spain for a new town to develop there needs to be a church, a whore house and a bar. We passed many stray 'Clubs' so they could possibly be hoping to start new towns or have their independent business excel in the scarceness.
Onwards we go, Portugal in the distance.

Another year has passed, the circus has come and gone. Looking back, 2011 was a better experience than previous years. Before the fuss started everyone anticipated the arrival of the elite, I the opposite. I knew that along with the incredible display of surfing there was the side I wasn’t too fond of. Late nights fueled by alcohol and the uncomfortable blind eye turned from the consumption of other substances. Last year I don’t think I surfed very much while the crew were around, late nights got the better of me and I even missed seeing Fanning win the final. This year I watched almost every heat and as the competition progressed it became more and more exciting! 5 minutes to go in the final, Aussie Jules gets up and announces he’s grabbing a victory beer as it was clear Julian had smashed it! Gabriel blew everyones’ minds! The ability he has to pull maneuvers in such a pressured moment deserves immense applause. Needless to say I now do enjoy the ASP events as the level of surfing in the competitions has risen and to watch it live on the beach is so intense!
Off to Portugal for the Ripcurl Pro! Yew!

La Tomatina is a festival celebrated on the last Wednesday of August. Every year, Buñol, a small town outside of Valencia, invites 40,000 people to let havoc have its way. It is said to have started due to a brawl that happened during the Gigantes y cabezudos festival (paper maché head parade). Where a group of men got into a scuffle and the nearby vegetable stand was demolished. The police had to break up the fight and those involved had to pay for the damages incurred. The following year the fight was repeated except that the participants brought their own vegetable-like ammunition. Repeated in subsequent years, the party was unofficially established.

La Tomatina is your typical food fight with the commencement displayed by the lucky/talented person who climbs to the top of a greased pole "palo jabón" to claim his leg of ham. This year was the first in 5 that someone had managed to climb the human pyramid and reach the top. The centre of the festivities was rammed by the high paying tour groups. Prime dollar means prime position. They were the ones that left on their air conditioned bus with acid in their eyes and a tomato stench that will remain with them for weeks. In the surrounding streets locals from their balconies and rooftops were throwing buckets of water over the hooligans below. We were 4 innocent girls, dressed in white and just so happened to walk through the middle of the main street and be bombarded by an aggressive group of Spaniards. We were previously made aware that not a single item of clothing worn on this day was ever going to be wearable and so considering our clothes were going to be ruined, men were inclined to aid the process of destroying our cheaply purchased apparel. We weren't fooled, our preparation was adequate and our black secured sports bras and scouts tying knots skills saved the day. 2 out of 4 girls' tops were ripped by this mob.

The tomato trucks arrived and after being attacked by the t-shirt rippers we retreated to safer ground. Along with the red slushy fruit came its smell. Everyone had tomato everywhere! In the summer sun it crusted in your hair and left our white outfit a textured red. After an hour of picking up splodgey tomato flesh and throwing it at who ever, the masses headed to the communal fountain to rinse themselves from the dried red slush before the partying begun. Sangria and Nanna's home made pizza slices were sold on the street and the local bakery displayed some fine spanish pastries.

The long day ended with the poor smelling pleb on the train and returning to the civility of Valencia.
I feel sorry for the town of Buñol, tomatoed as can be. Although, apparently the acidity of the tomatoes disinfects the cobblestone streets. I just wonder how long it takes for the horrid smell to leave. Why didn't those silly boys just have a water fight instead?

San Seb is a place that I am glad to have only 1 hour drive from my home in Seignosse. I don't think I appreciated truly the goodness that is there till I travelled to other cities of Spain. Its Basque cuisine and beautiful city architecture located on the beach would have to be one of my favourite places to escape the Hossegor madness to. I have been to Basque tapas bars in Barcelona and Madrid and they don't compare. The small streets that are lined with bars in the old town cater for a fun evening with friends trying a few tapas and having a kalimutxo or sangria and then moving on to the next. It is a great way to spend quality time with friends over a glass of wine accompanied by the best food of the region.

5th July 2011, Bordeaux bound.

An enormous motorcycle appears in front of out unregistered English piece of junk (as dodgy looking as they get. Mind you it does get you from A to B and Hossegor to Bordeaux is around 250kms, it succeeds in doing that.) The man in a navy uniform with the word 'DOUANE' clearly labelled on his back, points at us to follow him. His blue light flashes the same speed as our escalated hearts. We follow him to a destination where 10 police are standing awaiting out arrival. A mixture of hands on hips, hands behind backs, chests high and an essence of power oozing from their stance. Intimidation at its best.

Asked to get out of the car, we wait as our bags are searched and a dog sniffs the entirety of the interior. The powerful, fearsome police glare and ask 'marijuana? cannabis?' Nothing of the sort was found nor did we have any.

Sigh of relief our journey was not stopped there.

Had a quick cuddle with the skilful Labrador named Fresh and we were on our way to the airport. I, off to England for the Nike 6.0 Night Surf in Newquay and sisters Nicola and Jess to Lagos, Portugal to continue their European travels.

Another experience, another potential obstacle. All moments in life are to be enjoyed. Adrenaline filled or not.

Spontaneity in Madrid

With the subtle beats of Junip accompanying my wandering through the streets of Madrid I am in awe. I am in an incredible city I didn't know I would be till I was. After 4 hours of zig zagging the beautifully formed streets I return to the airport with blisters like never before.

Super stoked to have seen the Royal palace, Plaza Mayor, Plaza de España and every other corner of perfectly crafted architecture. To think that I was meant to be confined to the airport walls where I could have only imagined what would be waiting for me to explore. And so from a negative, being delayed in Bordeaux which meant I wouldn't make my connecting flight to Ibiza has become an incredible positive! What a stunning city!

The true essence of Spanish pride saturated the charismatic walls and their passion for love, freedom and culture could be read within a second of eye contact.

Not many blondies though...

Heureusement j'ai passé un jour à Bordeaux avant je pars pour Ibiza. J'avais la chance à voir tous les boutique dans la rue Sainte Catherine et profite bien dans l'atmosphère du style. Je voudrais dire merci à Niko et Ingrid pour tous! Je vais jamais oublier le bon goût des macarons que vous m'avez présenté!! (Je les vois tourjours en France mais je n'en ai jamais mangé)

So stoked to have spent a day in Bordeaux before leaving for Ibiza. I had the chance to see all the wonderful boutiques in Sainte Catherine street (the main shopping street including many oo la la shops) and enjoy the beautiful and stylish atmosphere Bordeaux has. I would like to say to Niko and Ingrid a big thank you for everything. I will never forget the incredible taste of macarons that you introduced to me. (I always see the in France but I have never eaten them.)

The space in which the audience sits is dark. The gleaming white stage lit up to show the O'neill Spring/Summer 2012 Collection awaits my presence. The 'Superkini' is described and it's enormous marketing event being held in Ibiza on the 9th June. Next. I am asked to join Manon on stage. The applause lifts me from my seat. The adrenaline pumping I climb to stage and feel the silence and attention of all 200 sales, marketing and PR personnel. Then to realise I didn't have a microphone. I had to make sure I was heard and appeared confident. The tremble in my voice was simply annoying. I accepted the fact I was nervous but that didn't alleviate the control my nerves had on my voice. Looking through the bright lights I see every pair of eyes on me. I can not remember a word I said. It's funny that when you're nervous your brain can completely switch off yet your instincts can naturally construct answers. The interview was a success and I am glad to have been introduced to each European country's representatives and hope to become more involved in each of their events. Thank you O'neill Europe.

After my fair share of dodgy meals and consequently travel insurance claims, I am 100% confident in saying vegetarian meals are the way to go. It's not worth the risk. Fish, Chicken, any kind of meat, if by chance it has gone bad, sitting on a flight sick or being refused to board a connecting flight is not worth the pain nor the hassle. The pros: Vegetarian and vegan meals are distributed before the rest, you are asked what you would like to drink with your meal before the flight even takes off, you don't pay extra for better quality meals as who knows where the airline catering companies purchase their meat? The cons: none! So make the effort to go online and request a vegetarian or vegan meal. The vegan is great because you don't risk getting cheesy pasta.. Fruit, salad, lentils and rice.... Yum!

Are rules and regulations put in place to aid or hinder travellers? Putting a limit on baggage allowance is understandable, however having to also carry sporting equipment creates difficulty in managing an acceptable amount of gear. If it were to be a 2 week trip to a tropical island where bikinis and sarongs would hardly weigh a thing it wouldn't be too bad. I am proud to say I have successfully packed all my clothing in a single suitcase. Winter and summer it's all in there! Hopefully the remainder of May and the beginning of summer are not too cold and my summer dresses jump out in anticipation to be twirled. First stop Hong Kong, feels like yesterday I flew through and stopped by. Here are a few photos from last time I had a stopover.

Busy Easter Footpaths

The day begins with the scramble, the fight, the quest of uncovering all the hidden chockies the silly bunny left in his tracks. Then it's cup of tea time. Sitting with the family looking at the kids skilfully unwrap their find. A quiet sigh as we remember the days when we lost sleep the night before. The anticipation and excitement to wake early and hopefully catch a glimpse.

It's the crisp first bite of freshly toasted hot cross bun that induces an elated spirit. The buttery, juicy sultanas that pop in your mouth. The big chocolate covered smiles. And the long lost thought that an excessive sugar rush is soon to implode.

With a tasty morning over we move into the family lunch and shortly after the thought that the body has eaten a years worth of chocolate and a christmas lunch amount of food.

Sunday afternoons, most relax at the closing of the weekend with a soothing pot of tea and think back on the calming or busy times passed in the comfort of one's home. Today, this Sunday however, different story. I think the guilty conscious of many encouraged them to get that chocolate filled arse off the couch and into walking mode.

VQS National Final, Manly

Friday 15th April was the first of the 2 day VQS National Final event at Manly Beach. The sun was shining, the kids were going wild with the free give aways and the surf was ... dribble. Blue skies and young screams from the joyous children kept everyone in high spirits! The surf was small and the competition hot as big prizes were at stake. With a forecast of better swell size for the final day everyone was battling to make it through the first few rounds.

Saturday 16th April, the quarters, semis and final of each division took place. The torrential rain and strong winds uninvitedly came along with the much wanted swell size and made it difficult to watch let alone surf. In the wet and cold, smiles and the popcorn machine pushed us through the uncomfortable attendance and yet another successful VQS tour came to an end.

Ripping Avalon superstar, Ali Kelly took out the chikibabes division! Stoked!

The Camera Club - 'We Stand Sideways'

On a crisp Autumn evening venturing to the young and vibrant town of Bondi I look forward to what images will soon treat my eyes. The Camera Club is based within the Beach Road Hotel having the intention of combining good times at the bar and 'celebrating creativity through camera-based pursuits.' The gallery is filled beautiful images by well known photographers; Tom Carey, Ben Brown, Richard Freeman, Ryan Miller and my favourite Sergio Villalba.

Sergio, born and raised in the Canary Islands, scored the cover of STAB magazine edition 46 with Julian Wilson in the wave pool of his home land.

Bus Transfer to Colombo

Was I better off asleep and unaware of our progress to the airport or wide awake and pumping with adrenalin? 4:30pm we left the luxurious Talalla Beach Retreat and began calmly in the wrong direction. The airport being due north, we were heading south to the take an inland road to avoid the traffic due to New Year festivities. So for a few hours I had utmost confidence in our driver that we would arrive safely and with plenty of time. Definitely wasn't the way it turned out.

I think I still would've been safer asleep and not known what was going on.

It began to rain torrentially, the streets were over flowing with New Year shoppers, the roads were narrowing by the second as the sides were washing away and visibility was worsened, the unappreciative high beam was in full throttle. The butterflies began as we climbed higher and higher into the mountains and away from what appeared to resemble a road to the airport.

When it was unbearable to watch our driver riskily overtake a tuktuk as a massive bus heading towards us was overtaking a car the seat was reclined and my eyes glued shut. Missing the action/potential catastrophe I was drawn to sit up and watch. We joked about how we would survive a head on collision. My pillow was in a ready position for if I were to go through the windscreen I could try land on it. Our laughter was comforting yet fuelled by fear. They say when you are about to die you see a bright light flash before your eyes. I think I saw this light way too many times. Even though it was the high beam of an oncoming truck, bus, van or car, it definitely came way too close with an alarming horn accompanying it.

Our final arrival was at 11:10pm, the airport was rammed with thousands of people. The task of getting my alligator of a board bag through the mob and into the doors seemed impossible. Checking in at 12am for a 12:40am departure I was glad to see I was not the only one who had struggled to be there 90 minutes before. Glad to have arrived alive I was sad to say my last istuti (thank you - Sinhala) to the immigration officer.

watching the sun rise every morning
the first sip of hot tea at 5am to attempt to bring us to our senses
the aches of our muscles after surfing a solid 4 hours
the longing to surf well and get a good shot
the feeling of starvation after surfing for hours without eating breakfast
the inability to comfortably sit on certain types of furniture as our legs are lathered with aloe in attempt to soathe the sun burn
big waves and smiles as we pass children
warmth of being welcome into Thushan's family home

Racist Dogs

Like the man himself said, "It don't matter if you're black or white!" In a country where it's inhabitants have dark skin it is out of the ordinary for a blonde, blue eyed white girl to wonder the markets in search of jewellery and saris. When a young toddler sees a white person for possibly the first time in he/she's life it is often a response of shock, fright and uncertainty as it is not an everyday occurence. So you would think that dogs too would be more comfortable amongst Sri Lankans, however not the case. Like the Fijian dogs, they bark at their black natives and favour white people. There are dogs everwhere, many that make your heart sink and turn away as the sight of reality is unbearable. All one can think is that hopefully this dog's life is soon to end and so will it's suffering. In our western world we show dogs affection, in Sri Lanka the dogs have no sense of belonging nor love to feel a connection with humans. Do the dogs sense our white soft spot or is it the difference of physical appearances where past experienced have detered them from black Sri Lankans? However, aren't dogs colour blind?

Rolling out of the van at an ungodly hour heading out to surf in a comatose state. Our dreaming is yet to conclude and our thoughts in reality are being controlled by our imaginations. You would think the first splash of water jumping from the rocks would encourage clarity yet along with a feeling of uncertainty our minds seem to have wandered. Laura jumped from the rocks and as the water dredged it exposed a long rock ahead. "Crocodile!" Corrine jumped from the rocks, immediately turned and scrambled back up the rocks. She was adamant she had seen a shark. After surfing for a while I had a sea snake swim by, and then later a turtle popped up to say hello. We had been told that a 12ft long crocodile had previously been seen out the back. Jack ensured us he had been accidently washed out of the lake in a storm weeks ago and it was a rarity to have one lurking around the surf. He also assured us that it was vegitarian. Quote of the day: Jess, "are there actually vegitarian crocodiles?" Lucy also saw a lion fish, whatever they may be. So in a single surf we were fortunate enought to see a range of wildlife. To add to our encounters with nature we have been in the presence of geckos and squirrels mating, the thousands of malnourished and disease infested dogs and the secretive monkeys spying into our roofless showers. 9 young girls enjoying the rural Sri Lankan wilderness away from the normalities at home however with the occassional skype and facebook sesh. Growth. Independence. Responsibility.

Tea Time

Gasping for air and spluttering with laughter we all then properly verbalise what actions we were doing underwater and what it was that gave us the giggles. In our submerged living room we act as ladies, the usual, sipping tea and having normal conversations. Yet it may be the out there make up and the 'no breathing rule' that suggests it was slightly more like one of the Mad Hatter's tea parties. After a long shoot our heads were left dizzy, our eyes a tad hazy and a feeling of ridicule was among us as we comsumed the fact that we dressed up for a party we couldn''t even enjoy the warmth and taste of tea. Only big laughs and cheezy grins were helping us exhale to the impossible just so we could stay under long enough to a) act out our part and b) get the shot. Tea. So English. Tea. So Sri Lankan. Oh the irony!

Lucky Man

Stepping outside of the bubble, taking on a journey miles from home, learning about different cultures and exploring their beliefs. It is all part of peering out of the van to this foreign nature and viewing what they believe is normal daily life. Covering your shoulders, not covering your shoulders. As we peer out are we too included in those who must follow their customs? Or are we considered as outsiders, seperate from their normality and so have no need to follow their dress code? Is it out of respect of their beliefs that we abide or is it to cover our vulnerability and deter certain looks we receive? "Lucky man" a tuktuk man said to Jack after seeing girls in the back of his truck. Is it part of the tour to stand out? There is nothing that really makes us that special. The confident lick of the lips, the creepy smirk, the suggestive wave, all of which send a quiet shudder through my body. But why take the fun out of it? Have a chuckle, how often would a man flatter you to that extent? Yes a tad too far, but why turn it into a negative experience? After all it's everyone's lucky day.

En Route Via an Unexpected Detour

Without the convenience of a private jet those of the pleb have to with stand the dread of flying unnecessarily far off track. The more you experience the accent and descent of a plane,the less sane you become. 9 and a half hours Sydney to Hong Kong, 1 hour stopover, 3 and a half hours to Singapore, what! Singapore! That wasn't on the itinerary. Thanks for informing us Cathay! 4 and a half hour flight to Colombo. Our transfer man of coarse didn't arrive till midnight, one hour late. On we started our drive south. Thankfully in the early hours there aren't much to dodge on the road and so only took 5 hours. Arrival at Tallalah Retreat was like flying around the world a million times in search of the gates to heaven. We finally found them. So our 29 hour travel came to a much wanted end. And so the moral is: pay the extra money and get direct flights. As much as I love getting a meal on every flight, it's nutrients will not be missed.

Sumba Foundation Charity Lunch

On Thursday 24th March I attended the Sumba Foundation Charity Lunch, alike 2010 it was a major success raising funds for the many projects put in place to aid the development of Sumba and it's people.

Acclaimed sporting legends and personalities including NRL Manly Sea Eagles captain Jamie Lions, former Rugby League star Noel "Crusher" Cleal, World Cup winning Wallabies legends Jason Little, Richard Harry, Matthew Bourke as well as Waratah player Lachie Turner were among America's Cup sailor Iain Murray, surf stars; Layne Beachley, Tom Carrol, and Cooper Chapman as well as National Iron Man winner Kendrick Louis each donating their time and money for such a great cause.

An astonishing $32,000 was raised by auctioning 2 dinners with Rugby Union big shots Jason Little, Richard Harry, Matthew Bourke and Lachie Turner each bidder contributing $16,000. Various holiday packages and memorabilia were also auctioned, all donations raised going towards improving water quality, malaria programs, malnutrition and education. The day conclusively raising over and incredible $85,000.

Sumba is one of the most impoverished islands in Indonesia. Larger than Bali and in the midst of paradise, Sumbanese children are amongst the poorest and most malnourished in the world. In some areas, as many as 1 in 3 die before the age of 8, as a result of preventable illnesses. Jumping off the boat and into the big blue. Only 5 of us out, friendly, mellow peeling left handers to enjoy together. Taking waves one by one, no hassling, hooting one another on to each set. As you paddle everything but the nose of your board is submerged. The blue water graciously trickles over the rails and you can see the blueness against your white board. While you wait out the back you continuously are enticed to dive down, spot a fish or two, admire the vibrant colours of the reef and the intense blue in the distance. Incredible to know that there are no other land marks heading south until you hit Antarctica. Out in the middle of the ocean you are exposed to all elements of the Pacific. Such raw energy travels across the Pacific to hit the Beqa reef and produce perfect peeling waves. Here you will find a surfer's paradise!

Fresh white towels, Pure Fiji products galore, bathrobe and slippers, outdoor bath tub, hibiscus and lei in the shape of a love heart placed on the bed, stunning grounds, buffets, bula love, smiles, relaxing spa treatments, 18 hole world renowned golf course, decked out gym, pool over looking Natadola Beach. Styling.

5 days of high class living soon evolved into backpacker dorms, wearing thongs in the shared showers, being grateful of that stolen hand towel now bath towel, basic breakfast, 3:30pm free scones and an average dinner. No poolside service but an amicable, fun atmosphere where exploring the Fijian waves along the coral coast is a daily possibility.

Intercontinental Golf & Spa Resort to the Beach House.
It was a Sunday afternoon when we drove out of the manicured gardens and followed the bumpy Queens Rd along the Coral Coast. This is true Fiji. Slowing down at each undeveloped village entrance allowing us to admire the variety of colours. A flash of bright eyes and gleaming teeth, local smiles and bula waves. Their slow demeanour, dragging of their sandles, chilled and relaxed composure. It was soon learnt that 'Fiji time' was no joke. Do you blame them? Coconuts in the trees, fish in the sea, fruits plentiful, being surrounded by the soft rustle of palm trees. Why rush? Life is good.

The Beach House had it's characters. The inmate typical drunk, American loud mouths, Dutch sly creepsters, the innocent till proven guilty promiscuous English, the occasional embarrassing Australians and the odd Euros who stood out like a sore thumb. Each personality, however subdued in daylight; as the sun sets over the pristine ocean, the bar kicks into full force and with the aid of terribly mixed music the nightlife and it's madness begins. Fijian bitter jugs, drinking games and 'oh no I've been locked out of my dorm' is the recipe for scoring as an English backpacker. Lucky Thomas! He now has a desire to visit his Swedish sugarbabe as her 'smitten' words invite him to her much cooler home. Breakfast is slow and the exuberant cheer from last night is gone. Day time is much more quiet. Rainforest walks, snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding, jewellery making and the ongoing task of sunbaking till you almost resemble a Fijian can only be complimented by a good book. The peaceful sounds of soft tinkling coral as water laps up the beach and the light bristle of the palms above allows the mind to unwind and as you slowly swing in you hammock you look over the calm lagoon at the unridden waves outside. Breath taking.

Only 200m paddle outside the lagoon, there is a fun, sucky right hander. Sitting out there with only one other person you glare at the cracks in the reef below. The 15ft deep crack only half a meter wide unsettles me as I sit in 5ft of water. Sight of the waves and the land is humanity's limit, what is present below as I look out for the oncoming set is unknown. I felt safest standup paddling inside the lagoon trying to spot the deep blue starfish below. I knew there was nothing down there but the added adrenalin made me paddle harder and catch anything that resembled a form of a wave. Just to keep busy. Just to keep my mind off the possible spectators.

With a great atmosphere and prime location the Beach House will be a place I recommend to fellow surfers travelling on Vitu Levu (main island).

Sam the Man

Sam Moyle (aka. Strawbs), born 17th March 1990 (St Patricks Day) studying Marine Biology has a passion for the ocean and all things blue. In exchange for a charted tour to Rottnest Island I agreed to aid Sam’s female popularity. Currently residing in Perth (Dalkeith Road) he is willing to cross the seven seas for the right kinda gal. Sam enjoys a crisp, cold beer on a Sunday evening at the OBH after a hard weekend surfing/fishing. As he watches the sun set over the Indian Ocean the glitter in his eyes has the ability to turn girls heads and lure them into his loving vicinity.

I would like to thank Sam for such a great day on the water. With an offshore wind, 37°C and only a few of us out, we scored fun, 2-3ft waves among the local seal colony. Even though at times I was uncertain of a safe arrival Sam’s nautical expertise saw us through the rough seas.
